Second Tasmanian Greens councillor quits party

Break O'Day councillor Liz Johnstone confirms she has left the minor party.

A second Tasmanian Greens councillor has resigned from the party this year, 6 News can reveal.

Liz Johnstone, a member of Break O'Day Council and a previous Greens state and federal candidate, has told 6 News: "I am no longer a member of the Tasmanian Greens".

"I continue to hold Green values but am now an independent councillor of Break O'Day," she added.

The exact reasons for the resignation is unclear. Break O'Day Council is currently comprised of eight independents (now including Johnstone) and one Independent Labor councillor, Kylie Wright.

Johnstone follows Kingborough councillor Gideon Cordover telling 6 News that he had resigned from the party after accepting a new job in the technology sector.

"I am now fully independent," he said last month.

Cordover says he resigned "because I accepted a new job in the technology sector working for a company whose clients include political parties and some politicians".

"I was asked by my prospective new employer to step away from overtly party-political activities, which I accepted," he added.

The Greens currently have nine elected councillors in Tasmania ahead of the local government elections in 2026.
